a series of intimate conversations with Bay Area artists in their studios
Johanna Poethig is a visual, public, and performance artist who has exhibited internationally and has been creating public artworks, murals, paintings, sculptures, and multimedia installations for more than 40 years. Her practice moves between realism and abstraction, architectural and intimate scales, historical and contemporary politics, futurist musings, humor and satire, feminist perspectives, collaborative processes, and cultural critique.
Poethig invents card-reading systems that explore time and place through ancient and contemporary practices of prediction, chance operations, and systems of divination. In her current work, created in the midst of the climate crisis, mathematical patterns found in nature’s terrestrial and extraterrestrial life systems are expressed through experiential landscapes, surrealistic portraits, and texts that converge in speculative storytelling.
She is currently transmitting original songs and video through hand-held ceramic radios as part of her conceptual performance persona, the Radio Earth Station as performance persona DJ Enlichenment.
Poethig was raised in the Philippines and has lived in Chicago, San Francisco and Oakland since coming to the United States. She received her BFA at University of California, Santa Cruz and her MFA at Mills College in Oakland, California.
The artist invites the SEE(d) Creative Network to join in radical earthly dialogue in her backyard garden studio on Sunday October 11, 3 PM - 5 PM. Purchase your tickets here.
