Heesoo Kwon
Heesoo Kwon (she/they) is a multimedia artist whose practice interlaces digital technology with feminist spirituality and ethnographic inquiry. Employing 3D animation, modeling, and AI, the artist crafts immersive digital worlds that reimagine matrilineal histories and queer the structures of familial relationships. Within these digital ethers, Kwon conjures feminist utopia—realms of healing and liberation from the personal, familial, and ancestral wounds etched by centuries of inscribed patriarchy.
In her first solo museum exhibition, Leymusoom Garden: Following Naked Dancing and Long Dreaming, Kwon explores her spiritual journey connecting Korean shamanistic and indigenous perspectives to the land with her female ancestors. Her multimedia installation extends the queer feminist utopian digital space of Leymusoom to the mysticism of the garden, deepening her connection to the land and women’s freedom and desire.
Heesoo Kwon (b. 1990 in South Korea) received a Master of Fine Arts at the University of California, Berkeley, and is currently an Assistant Professor in the Animation department at the California College of the Arts. Selected exhibitions include: Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Los Angeles; Cantor Arts Center at Stanford University, Stanford; Buk Seoul Museum of Arts, Seoul; Huis Marseille, Amsterdam; EFA Project Space, New York; Institute of Contemporary Art San Jose, San Jose; San Francisco Arts Commission Gallery, San Francisco; Blinkers Art & Project Space, Winnipeg; West Den Haag, Netherlands; and WMA Space, Hong Kong.
